JUST PASSING
These works recall the start of
my visual awareness – the end of childhood amnesia, when objects
and images are understood and language begins to be used. Snatches of
nursery rhymes and contemporary song lyrics can be seen along with faint
memories of games, minor humiliations and excitements and the presence
of the street itself. These merge with aspects of contemporary political
events of which at the time I was unaware but which influenced the rest
of my life, particularly the beginning of the cold war with its cast
of labour party heroes and communist bogeymen, here represented by their
hats.
