From Art Delinquency Notes

An aggressive element was apparent in the Boy and Girl in the ideological sense. A social 'group' which recruited its adherents from the working class intelligentsia and sympathisers amongst adolescents. The Sartre-accentuated Existentialist Nihilist of the Elephant & Castle was the prototype, especially among the young artists.

THERE ARE THREE COMMON THEMES IN ART BEHAVIOUR:

Much of it is, in strictly rational terms, pointless and senseless - much of the behaviour is an expression of exuberance and high spirits..."When you're an artist you want to let off a bit of steam."

It is almost never done by artists on their own or in pairs; the members of the peer group support each other..."They sort of get carried away with each other.

Much of it is literally 'antisocial'; other people may be frightened or disturbed. The artists themselves are unconcerned or actually want to strike at society.

Barry and his mates had a den up near the gasworks. Everything that they nicked they took back there. 'Our gallery,' they called it.
One afternoon, on his way to the pictures, Barry passed a lorry parked in the High Street. There was a load of culture on the back of this lorry and nobody around to keep an eye on it. So Barry lifted a whole lot and took it into the cinema with him. He sat in there on his own right through three complete performances. The culture was stuck on his lap and every now and then he'd take a bit.
Barry and his mates had a hobby. They were always nicking things. Sweets, fags, pop. Especially from Woolie's. They all had nicknames. They were all named after the things that they liked nicking best, or nicked the most of, or were best at nicking. So Barry's nickname was 'Art'.
Sometimes the little local galleries weren't enough of a giggle. Too easy. So then they'd off up to the museum. Dead easy to get into, but you were much more likely to get a tap because they hired out-of-work artists to patrol the grounds. You never knew if you were going to bump into one of them. They were weak bastards, but they could run fast and they were good at giving descriptions to the bill.
But the place was dead easy to get into really. There was a loose bit in the fence that they didn't know about. And then in through that window. A pushover. Until they increased the art patrol. And got a couple of dogs.
Barry was caught one Sunday afternoon. He hadn't expected them to have a patrol out on a Sunday afternoon.
He'd always got probation before. A year here and there. But this time they gave him three months approved school.
